About Us
Established in 1998, Great Pond Foundation leads in estuary science and restoration, using data generated by our programs for informed pond management. Our team builds strong partnerships with neighbors; fostering learning and expertise; and sharing tools and techniques. The coastal ponds of Martha’s Vineyard are globally rare, ecologically fragile, treasures whose preservation and restoration are fundamental to the Island’s long-term sustainability. The Island depends on clean and healthy coastal waters to feed families and support the local economy. These living waters define both the spirit and the character of our community.
We had a great 🤩time hosting @thetrusteesmv high school summer☀️ environmental interns yesterday! They joined our team on Edgartown Great Pond to collect water 💧 samples and conduct a plankton tow. After being in the field 🛶, they processed their samples back in the lab 🥼 . They also used microscopes 🔬to get a close-up look 👀 at their plankton tow samples!

Curious 🧐 how much the salinity in EGP changes after a cut❓These maps 🗾show bottom salinity 🧂 levels before the cut on 6/9/25 and salinity levels 2 week after the cut ✂️on 6/23/25. The pond had an average salinity increase 👆of 7.89 ppt after 2 weeks of mixing!

MV CYANO is in full swing! As you enjoy the pond 💧make sure to keep an eye 👁️ for 🦠green stuff! The BOH have issued a red🔴advisory in the northern most ponds of TGP. This means that in addition to not letting your pets🐕 play in the water, the BOH advise against a fishing 🎣 and/or eating catch from, or wading or swimming 🏊♀️ until conditions change for the better.

✂️CUT CHECK: The Edgartown Great Pond 💧 cut closed 🚫 on Monday June, 16th. On this closure day the elevation was at 0.90 ft above NAVD88 (1.28 ft above local mean sea level). The pond was open to the ocean 🌊 for 7 days almost reaching the 9-11 day cut opening target 🎯. Although not optimal, this cut still had a positive ⭐️impact on the pond!
➡️As of 6/18 the pond elevation 📈was at 1.062 ft above NAVD88 (1.442 ft above local mean sea level).
➡️Stay tuned for more recent elevation data and salinity 🧂levels after the Pond’s had a week to mix!

We were grateful ☺️ to be able to discuss water💧 quality and explore coastal pond ecosystems with the 3rd grade students at the Edgartown School.
On the last day of this 3-day program the students learned about our science 🔬 equipment, what a healthy pond ecosystem looks like, and ways to keep our coastal ponds thriving. To end the day the students built their own pond ecosystems in a jar🫙 ! Thank you 👏to the 3rd grade students for joining us and sharing your knowledge 🧠and enthusiasm 🤩about our ponds!
