About Us
Established in 1998, Great Pond Foundation leads in estuary science and restoration, using data generated by our programs for informed pond management. Our team builds strong partnerships with neighbors; fostering learning and expertise; and sharing tools and techniques. The coastal ponds of Martha’s Vineyard are globally rare, ecologically fragile, treasures whose preservation and restoration are fundamental to the Island’s long-term sustainability. The Island depends on clean and healthy coastal waters to feed families and support the local economy. These living waters define both the spirit and the character of our community.

Jacob’s Pond had cyanobacteria 🦠 levels in the orange 🟠bloom watch status. During a WATCH status the BOH advises against having dogs 🐕, other pets, and livestock come in contact with the water 💧. Keep an eye 👁️ out for surface and benthic scum and use caution when swimming, paddling, or wading in the water in bloom watch areas.

This week our science 🧪 team had their first sample run on Edgartown Great Pond marking the official start of the field season🛶! We collected water 💧 quality data and water samples from 12 stations across the pond. MV CYANO Series Part 3:
After collecting the samples, cyanobacteria 🦠concentrations are measured 📏 in the same day using a bbe Moldaenke Fluoroprobe. The Fluoroprobe is a spectral fluorometer that can estimate phytoplankton abundance through fluorescence of pigments unique to individual algal groups. After the data 📊 is reviewed by the Islands Boards of Health (BOH), MV CYANO releases coordinated color-coded maps 🗺️ indicating the cyanobacteria bloom risk level. Signage is also posted along the shores if 🟡YELLOW, 🟠ORANGE, or 🔴RED risk levels are present.

In the summer😎there is no better place to be than on the pond. It is important to remember to be on the lookout 👀 for green 🟢 blobs and scums, as they could potentially be toxic Cyanobacteria🦠. If you see a potential bloom, please report 📲 it to the corresponding town Board of Health Agent. GPF scientists👨🔬will then go to the site and sample the bloom!
